Anne Kearney Collins

Anne Kearney Collins of Mountain Road, Eddyville, NY died Friday, March 5, 2004 at the Benedictine Hospital, Kingston. She was 73. She was born in Ireland on February 28, 1931, the eldest daughter of the late Dr. Joe and Peggy (Callanan) Kearney. She was educated at The Convent of the Sacred Heart, University College Dublin, and The University of Liverpool. Anne qualified as a psychiatric social worker in 1954 and began her professional career in Glasgow where she worked at the Notre Dame Child Guidance Clinic. She dedicated her life to working with children and families in crisis. Over her career, she worked at the Astor Home, St. Cabrini Home, the Children's Home of Kingston and Dutchess A.R.C. In 1957 she emigrated to the United States and lived briefly in New York City. She moved to Rhinebeck in 1959, where she met the love of her life, Joseph Milo Collins. On February 14, 1961 Joe and Anne were married at the Good Shepherd Church, Rhinebeck. They lived there until 1978, when Anne and her family moved to Mahopac. Anne loved and missed the beauty of the Hudson Valley and returned to this area in 1985, spending the remainder of her life in Eddyville. In addition to her husband and best friend of 43 years, Anne will be missed by her three sons Joseph of New York City, James and his fiance Linda Madden of St. Paul, Minn., and Nikos and his wife Tammy of North Syracuse; one daughter Chantal DeFile and her husband John of Rhinebeck; two brothers Dr. Thomas R. Kearney of Raleigh, NC and Dr. Eugene Kearney and his wife Joan of Baltray, Ireland; two sisters Peggy and Noreen Kearney, both of Dublin, Ireland; four grandchildren Patrick and John DeFile, Max and Liam Collins. She will also be missed by her many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Church, Rhinebeck on Tuesday, March 9th at 10:00 AM. Inurnment will be in the Town of Rhinebeck Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, in appreciation of Anne's care on the oncology unit, memorial contributions may be made to 'Benedictine Health Foundation,' 105 Mary's Ave., Kingston, NY 12401.
