Arthur R. Palmer Sr.

Arthur R. Palmer, Sr. of Stony Run Apartments, Kingston died Friday, April 4, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital. He was 90. He was born in Brooklyn on January 6, 1918, a son of the late Margaret Montgomery Klenski. He served in WW II in the US Navy in both Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operation. He served on the USS Owl and USS Mount Olympus. Mr. Palmer was present at the signing of Japan's surrender at Tokyo Bay in August 1945. He married Julia Durland on February 11, 1943. Formerly of New York City, for many years Mr. Palmer lived in Valley Stream, Long Island. He moved to this area in 1955 and began a 25 year career with I.B.M. A Senior Associate in Kingston, he retired in 1980 and belonged to the Quarter Century Club. A past president of the board of directors of Ulster ARC, one of their Intermediate Care Facilities: "Palmer House" on Flatbush Road, Town of Ulster was named in his honor. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph's Church and previously volunteered at United Way of Ulster County. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Julia Palmer; two daughters Gayle Brackett of Jacksonville, FL and Susanne Palmer of Kingston; one son Arthur R. Palmer Jr. of Kingston; two grandsons Paul and William Brackett; one great granddaughter Bailey Beth Brackett; one brother Harold Palmer of Elmont; one sister Arlene Dowling of Altamont Springs, Florida; many nieces and nephews. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:15 AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Wiltwyck Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gateway Community Industries, 1 Amy Kay Parkway, Kingston, NY 12401.
