Augusta Luksberg, 89, (nee Rafalowicz), of Shady, passed away at home on Sunday, March 14, 2021.
She was born in Brussels, Belgium and survived WWII as a hidden child in a convent after surgery. She married her soulmate Romain on November 11, 1951. In 1956 they left Europe and relocated to the Bronx. From there they moved to the Upper East Side and in 1973 they left the city and moved fulltime into their weekend retreat in Shady, NY. Augusta traded Bloomingdale’s for Caldor’s – but never complained. She spent the next twenty years working side by side with Romain at John Romain Handbags in Kingston.
Augusta is survived by her son Marc and his wife Ellen, her grandsons Joshua and his wife Leslie, and Jeremy and his wife Arielle and her great grandchildren Jackson, Mallory, and Bari. She is also survived by Fanny, Henri, and Marco and family in Belgium and nieces and nephews.
Augusta was predeceased by her parents, Itzek and Sara her brother Max, her sister/shvest Jeanine Burk, and her husband Romain.
Augusta was a strong and proud woman. She liked to be the life of the party – always arriving late. She enjoyed gourmet meals and fine French wine and sharing all with friends and family. She was an outstanding cook. Her travels took her on many special vacations including summers in Brussels and the Belgian seashore and Februarys in St. Martin.
The family thanks Hudson Valley Hospice and Care Alternatives and long-time care giver Addy – who is still quarantined in Ghana – and Theola who was supposed to be with us for six weeks and wound up staying for fifteen months keeping Augusta Covid-free.
Funeral services and interment will be private.
