Dr. Cy Gruberg, 96, of Kingston, NY; Weston, FL and Hilton Head, SC, died, Thursday, March 4, 2021 surrounded by family.

He was born in Kingston, NY a son of the late Joseph and Sara J. Jacobson Gruberg. Dr. Gruberg was an educator and Director of Guidance & College Counseling.
A graduate of Kingston High School, Kingston, NY, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ in 1948, and masters from Syracuse University in 1949. He took graduate courses in Guidance, Counseling and Psychology from Columbia University, NYU, Harvard University, University of Maine, Vermont, Hofstra and Adelphi Universities. Dr. Gruberg received a PhD in 1980.

He Served in World War II– enlisted 1942 – discharged 1946 as Technician Third Grade; served as 1st Lieutenant in US Army Reserves – 1949 – 1959.
He was a Teacher and Guidance counselor at Wellington C. Mepham High School in Bellmore, NY (1949-1960); Dean and Director of guidance at Lynbrook (Long Island) High School (1960-1966); Assistant Professor at SUNY New Paltz (1966-1967); Director of Pupil Personnel Services (1967-1977) and Director of Guidance (1977 – 1985) at Hastings-on-Hudson NY High School (1967-1985); and Director of College Counseling at University School of Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (1985-2000.) Since 2000 Dr. Gruberg has done Private College Counseling.

He was a Group leader at summer resident camps (1950-1955), Faculty at Institute Beau Soliel in Villars, Switzerland (1956), Tour director, summers, US, Europe, Russia, Israel, Mexico, and Canada (1961-1971), Admissions Interviewer at Columbia University (1985), Faculty of Focus at Tufts University in Medford, MA summers (1990-1992),
Dr. Gruberg was active in American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Fund, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Board of Directors for the Mid-Hudson Valley Region NY, Leukemia Society, Community Scholarship drives, Advisory committee of Hastings Youth Employment Services; Advisory Council of Graham Home, Hastings-on-Hudson; Chairman, Hastings Student Project; Member of Hastings Safety Commission; and Board of directors of Echo Hills Mental Hill Clinic in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

He was a Faculty Advisor – Key Club International (1960 – 2000), Longest length of volunteer service in Key Club International), Volunteer at Cleveland Clinic and Hospital, Weston, FL and named Volunteer of the Year (2000), Recipient of National citation in Parents Magazine (1960-1965), Recipient of the William O. Hamilton award for being the Outstanding Key Club Advisor in NY State (1964 and 1972), June 3, 1981 proclaimed Cy Gruberg Day by Westchester County, NY Executive, September 8, 1984 – NY State Outstanding Service by Lieutenant Governor, Alfred DelBello, Named to Senior Hall of Fame in Broward County, Florida (2000), Named to “Who’s Who in America”, “Who’s Who in the World”, “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”, Honorary Scholarship Committee Member – The American Indian Education Foundation, Member of the VFW (Golden Circle Member), NY State Teachers Association, NY State Personnel and Guidance Association, NEA, National Association for College Admissions Counseling, American Legion, Jewish War Veterans, Phi Delta Kappa (60 year member), Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity Foundation – 1898 Society, B’nai B’rith and Kiwanis.
Circle of Life Member – The US Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C., Hall of Philanthropy – National Jewish Health, Denver, CO, Congregation Ahavath Israel, Kingston, NY, North American Conference of Ethiopian Jury, Make a Wish Foundation, Melanoma Research Foundation Boys Town, Israel, Jewish Federation of Ulster County, NY, Danny Thomas St. Jude Society – Memphis, TN; Legacy Wall and Brick Pathway, Boys Town, NE Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, AL – Certificate of Honor, St. Joseph Indian School, Donor of the year- Help Hospitalized Veterans, Freedom Team Salute – outstanding service to the nation as a US Army Soldier. Dedication of the Dr. Cy Gruberg Guidance & College Counseling Center at the University School of Nova Southeastern University where he was previously Director, The Chabad Synagogue of Kingston dedicated the Dr. Cy Gruberg Hebrew School

Dr. Gruberg is survived by his brother, Jack Gruber of Poughkeepsie, nieces and nephews, Barbara Vaughn, Larry Weinstein, Laurie Gruberg-Rua, Barry Gruberg, Robin Licker and Stephen Gruberg. great nieces and nephews, Stefan and his wife, Caitlin, Mark, Justin, Corey and Shaina, Aaliyah, Geri, Brett, Cody, Jesse, Yara, Rigel, Michael, Glenn, Marcie, Stephen, David, great-great nieces and Nephews, Georgia, Charlotte, Emery, Lilli, David, Gabrielle, Cody, Jr, Astoria, Eli, Jake, Molly, Kaia.

He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald I. Gruberg who died in 1986 and his sister, Frieda Weinstein who died in 2007.

A Funeral Service was held at the Simpson-Hammerl Funeral Home on Friday, March 5, 2021 with Rabbi Yitzchok Hecht, officiating.

Interment followed in Montrepose Cemetery.
