Donald E. Luby

Donald E. Luby of Brigham Lane, Lake Katrine died Sunday, January 27, 2008 at his home. He was 84. He was born in Brooklyn on September 13, 1923, a son of the late Edward and Mary "Mame" Doolin. In 1927 Mr. Luby moved to this area. He attended Kingston High School and began employment at Hercules Powder Co. in Port Ewen. PFC Luby entered the Marine Corps in February 1942. He served in major engagements during WW II on Saipan, Tiian and Guam. He was awarded the Gold Star in lieu of a second Purple Heart Medal for wounds received as a result of enemy action in the Asiatic Pacific Area in 1944. He also received a Silver Star for Bravery. Mr. Luby was a Life Member of the Marine Corps Association; Military Order of The Purple Heart; Second Marine Division Association; Purple Heart New England Chapter; Disabled American Veterans and the Joyce-Schirick Post 1386, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He belonged to the American Legion, Town of Ulster Post #1748. He returned to Hercules upon returning from service and then began a 30-year career at I.B.M. Mr. Luby worked in Kingston as a maintenance manager. He belonged to the Quarter Century Club. Mr. Luby was a licensed electrician and plumber. A long-time member of the Y.M.C.A., Kingston, he was a Life Member of the Saugerties Fish & Game Club. He was a parishioner of St. Catherine Laboure Church and former member of the Kingston Council 275, Knights of Columbus. In 1996 he received a "Conspicuous Service" recognition from Governor Pataki. His wife, Dorothy Doran Luby died August 15, 2005. One brother, Edward M. Luby and one sister, Emma Miller both died previously. Surviving is his daughter, Donna Marie Luby of Lake Katrine and his son, Daniel Luby and his wife, Joyce of Sawkill, three grandchildren, Tammy Kalfas and her husband Jeff, Daniel Luby III and his wife Erin and Dawn Luby; several nieces and nephews. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral procession will form on Wednesday at 9:15 AM at the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine Laboure Church, Lake Katrine at 10:00 AM. Interment, with military honors by Joyce - Schirick Post 1386 Color Guard, will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
