Donald Schonger

Donald Frank 'Red' Schonger of First Ave., Kingston died Friday, June 15, 2007 at his home. He was 60. He was born in Ellenville on October 6, 1946, a son of the late Donald W. and Virginia L. O'Bryon Schonger. He was raised in Kerhonkson and attended school in Rondout Valley. Mr. Schonger graduated from Kingston High School, class of 1964. He worked at the Hudson Cement Plant and Rosendale Plains Cemetery. He began a career as a corrections officer at Wallkill Correctional Facility. He married Sharon Williams on February 18, 1967. Mr. Schonger served in the US Army from 1968 - 1969 in Germany. He returned and resumed his job at the Wallkill Correctional Facility. He retired from Wallkill in 1995 after 29 years. He recently worked at Lab Corps as a courier at Kingston and Benedictine Hospitals. An avid motorcyclist, golfer and pinochle player, he traveled to Alaska several times to fish. A 30 year resident on Parkcrest Dr., Rosendale, Mr. Schonger then moved to Kingston. Surviving in addition to his wife Sharon Schonger, are one daughter Stacey M. Schonger of Kingston and her fiancé Mike F. Binns; one son Donald W. Schonger of Bloomington; two granddaughters Brittany and Alexis Schonger; one sister Sandra L. Donohue of Napanoch and one brother George M. Schonger of Port Ewen, one daughter in law Michelle Schonger of Kingston. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the funeral home, Rev. Bryan Buck will officiate.
