Evelyn Brener

Evelyn Brener of Park St., Hurley died Thursday, December 10, 2009 at home. She was 64. She was born August 11, 1945 in Gorlice, Poland, a daughter of the late Isaac and Rose Wachtel Salzman. Mrs. Brener received her Bachelor's and Master of Education degrees from Queens College in New York City. She taught elementary school for a time in the Kingston Consolidated School District and was the bookkeeper for the family business, the Rosendale Pharmacy. She was a member of Congregation Ahavath Israel and a past-president of the Sisterhood of Ahavath Israel and was active in publishing the Congregation's newsletter. She was an active member of the Jewish Federation of Ulster County and edited the monthly Federation newsletter. She had been named the Jewish Federation's Volunteer of the Year. She was a life member of Hadassah. Surviving is her husband, David G. Brener, two sons, Craig Brener, MD and his wife Alyson of Hurley; Thomas Brener and his wife Inbal of Manhattan; a sister, Celia Salzman of Millbrook and five grandchildren, Ariel, Joseph, Shira, Eric and Abigail. Two nieces and a nephew also survive. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, 11:00 AM at Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Yael Romer will officiate. Interment will follow in Montrepose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Congregation Ahavath Israel, 100 Lucas Ave., Kingston, NY 12401 or the Jewish Federation of Ulster County, 159 Green St., Kingston, NY 12401 or the American Cancer Society, 95 Schwenk Dr., Kingston, NY 12401.
