Gerald FitzGerald

d. January 20, 2021

Gerald “Jerry” E. FitzGerald, Jr., 82 of Saratoga Springs, formerly of Kingston, died Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Saratoga Springs Hospital. Born in Kingston in September 1938, Jerry was son of the late Gerald E. FitzGerald Sr. and Genevieve Scannell FitzGerald.

Jerry graduated from Kingston High School in 1957 and served in the Army National Guard. After a career in sales and management, Jerry retired in 1993 from the American Tobacco Company, where he focused on the things that were most important to him – family, friends, and his faith.

Jerry was a devoted husband to the love of his life Janice throughout their 57 years together. He raised three children all of whom know how much he loved them. Jerry’s sense of humor made him memorable and beloved. He’ll be remembered for teasing and being teased, eager to laugh and to make others laugh. Jerry’s friends and neighbors were an extension of his family. His walks or bike rides through the neighborhood would last hours because of the stops he would make chatting and checking in with people along his route – wearing his bright yellow cap which Jerry claimed would warn neighbors he was coming!

Jerry’s playful kid-like spirit that showed through playing horseshoes in the backyard or ping-pong in the garage will live on in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His faith neither wavered nor prevented him from being open-minded. He was dedicated to his Saint Colman’s faith community whether it was through worship inside the church or caring for the grounds outside the church.

Jerry responded to the complexity of the world with a focus on the simple things of life that matter most – love, friendship, and faith.

Jerry is survived by his two sons, Gerald “Jay” FitzGerald and his wife Susan of Queensbury, NY and James FitzGerald and his wife Jaimy George of Delmar, NY; four grandchildren Caitlin Harrington and her husband Jon, Gerald “Ryan” FitzGerald and his fiancée Stephanie Cavalier, Nathan FitzGerald, and Asha FitzGerald; and two great-grandchildren, Elise Harrington and Grant Harrington.

Jerry was predeceased by his wife Janice in 2016, his sister Jacqueline Matthews in 2008, and his daughter, Jill E. FitzGerald in 2011.

Due to Covid-19, the Funeral Mass at Saint Colman’s Church and interment in Saint Mary’s Cemetery will be held privately.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will take place once it is safe for friends, family, and loved ones to come together safely in person.

Simpson-Hammerl Funeral Home is honored to assist the family of Gerald with the arrangements.

The family would like to convey their gratitude to the very devoted staff at the Home of the Good Shepherd memory care unit/assisted living facility in Saratoga Springs for the love and care they gave Jerry over the last two years. The family is also deeply grateful to the staff on A3 at Saratoga Hospital for their professionalism and competence in providing Jerry with compassionate and comfortable end-of-life care.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2649 South Road #101, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
