Gertrude Hood

Gertrude Hood, 87, of Saugerties, died Thursday, April 9, 2015. Born in Brooklyn, she was a daughter of the late Herman & Marie Schreiber Meier. Gertrude was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Palenville. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and British comedies, but the most important part of her life was her family. She was a selfless wonderful wife, mother and sister whose main concern was taking care of her family. Gertrude's first "baby" was her German shepherd, Perry, whose unconditional love helped her through some very difficult times. She was also very proud of her heritage. Gertrude is survived by her husband of 49 years, Anthony P. Hood of Saugerties, whom she married on September 8, 1965, two daughters, Leslie Nicosia and Irene Hood of Palenville, a brother, Robert Meier, of Syracuse and a sister, Dorothy Trust and her husband Stuart, of Syracuse. Three nephews, David Trust, George Meier and Jeffrey Meier and two nieces Pamela Detmering and Anneliese Trust also survive. In addition to her parents, Gertrude was predeceased by a brother, George Meier, a nephew, Eric Trust and a son in law, Lou Nicosia. Gertrude will be reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 from 5-7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Palenville at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in St. Mary of the Snow Cemetery in Saugerties. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Ulster County SPCA, 20 Wiedy Rd, Kingston, NY 12401.
