John Joseph Carroll

John Joseph Carroll of North Road, Tillson died Monday, August 25, 2008 at Benedictine Hospital. He was 75. He was born in Middletown on January 18, 1933, a son of the late Edward J. and Dorothy C. Cunningham Carroll. He graduated Ellenville High School in 1950 and enlisted in the Navy. Mr. Carroll served from November 2, 1950 to December 7, 1953 during the Korean Conflict as an Electronics Technician in the Amphibious Forces Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. He gaduated from the Navy Class A Electronics School in 1951. He was Honorably discharged in 1953 and enrolled at Indiana Tech. Mr. Carroll graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering degree in 1957. He belonged to the USS Belle Grove Reunion Association Mr. Carroll worked from 1958 to 1965 as a field engineer on missile systems and the first lunar excursion module with Maxson Corporation and Grumman Aircraft Corporation. He also worked with FAA on airborne test of experimental aircraft collision avoidance systems. On July 20, 1963 he married Mary Kathryn Ferguson. From 1965 to 1990 was employed by IBM in Kingston as an Advisory Engineer and Department Manager in Systems Development retiring after 25 years of service. An area resident since 1965, Mr. Carroll served as Lector, Eucharistic Minister, and Historian for St. Peter's Church in Rosendale. During the 1970's and 1980's served as Trustee, Parish Council, Choir, Marriage Encounter and Religious Educator for St. Peter's Church in Rosendale. He was a Life Member of New Paltz Post 8645 Veterans of Foreign Wars, served as a member of the Color Guard and past Post Commander, Quartermaster, Adjutant, Trustee, and House Committee at various times over the years. Mr. Carroll was a member of the Tillson Post 1219 American Legion. One sister, Margaret Grant, and one brother, Edward Carroll Jr., both died previously. Surviving in addition to his wife of 45 years, Mary Kathryn Ferguson Carroll, are one daughter Kathleen M. Carroll Walsh of Rosendale, two sons William F. Carroll of Fredricksburg VA, and Harold A. Carroll of Tillson; seven grandchildren Harold, Michael, and Brianna Carroll, Luisa, Leighanna, John, and Gabriella Walsh; two sisters Catherine Robin of Geneseo, NY, and Eileen Frick of Waxhaw, NC, many nieces and nephews. Reposing at Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A candlelight service will be conducted on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The funeral procession will form on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter's Church, Rosendale at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 or the VFW Post 8645 Relief Fund, 101 Route 208, New Paltz, NY 12561.
