Margrit Salimone

d. August 16, 2016

Margrit Antonia Schning Salimone, 91, of Kingston, died Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at HealthAlliance Hospital Broadway Campus. Born in Bremen, Germany, she was a daughter of the late Franz & Gertrude Foppe Schning. Margrit immigrated to this country by boat in 1958 from Hamburg and settled in New Jersey. In 1964, she moved to Ulster County and, in 1967, she proudly became a U.S. citizen. In 1981, Margrit moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, before returning to this area in 2001. For several years, she owned and operated Margrit's Restaurant in Kingston. She later worked at the former Park Diner and then for many years as a hostess and waitress at the Skytop Steakhouse. Despite the hardship she experienced during World War II, Margrit will forever be remembered as an independent, hard-working woman who loved to share a laugh with anyone who would join her. Margrit was devoted to her family and was very proud of all of their accomplishments, including her daughter's successful business career and service as a volunteer firefighter in Ulster County, as well as her son Lonnie's distinguished service to the Coast Guard. Margrit was an excellent cook, and enjoyed preparing meals for her children and grandchildren. As a former model, she was also very interested in fashion and buying clothes for her loved ones. She was a woman of faith who came to know Christ while living in Daytona Beach. Margrit is survived by three children, Charlet Wenzel of Kingston, Lonnie Salimone and his wife Shannon of Tallahassee, FL, and Bernd Scharf and his wife Carmen of Germany; two sisters, Josephine Porath of Bremen, Germany, and Angelika Sundermeier of Offenberg, Germany; grandchildren Margrit & Rachael Wenzel, Shelby Andrews and her husband Trevor, Conni & Colle Scharf, and Sabrina & Arienne Hartsfield; and great grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews and cousins in Germany also survive. She is preceded in death by her former spouse, Anthony Salimone, with whom she remained friends throughout her life, and her daughter-in-law, Sherry Salimone. The family will receive friends at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 from 5:00-7:00pm. Funeral service and interment will be held privately. Memorial donations may be made to Ulster Hose Company #5, 830 Ulster Ave, Kingston, NY 12401
