Mario J. Calcaterra

Mario J. Calcaterra, of Newtown, CT, died 3:40 AM on Saturday, August 28, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Connecticut Healcare System, West Haven Campus. He was 89. Born in West Hoboken, NJ on July 16, 1915, he was a son of the late Primo and Amanda Fontata Calcaterra. In 1937 Mr. Calcaterra enlisted in the US Navy. He served in Europe and Asia on the USS Neches, USS Beaver, USS Piedmont and the US New Hampshire. He was honorably discharged in April 1945 as Boilermaker First Class. Mr. Calcaterra was a Life Member of the Joyce – Schirick Post 1386, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kingston and the Disabled American Veterans, Palenville. A longtime resident of Greenwich Village, Manhattan, for 18 years Mr. Calcaterra was the chief copy cutter and linotype operator for the NY Daily News. In 1972 he moved to Palenville and was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church. A resident of Penstock Lane, Lake Katrine since 1984, he was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, Kingston. Mr. Calcaterra recently moved to Newtown, CT. His wife Irene T. Calcaterra died August 4, 2003; two brothers Paul and John Calcaterra both died previously. Surviving are one son Dennis Calcaterra of Aurora, Colorado; one daughter Jo Ann Durdock of New Milford, CT; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several niece and nephews. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Avenue, Kingston on Tuesday from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 PM. The funeral procession will form on Wednesday at 9:15 from the Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, Palenville at 10:30 AM. Interment will be in Palenville Cemetery. In Mario's memory, contributions may be made to the American Heart Assoc., PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220.
