Michael D. Corey of Kingston, NY died Monday, December 18, 2006 at his home after a long illness. He was 56. Michael was the skipper of the century-old ice-yacht, Puff, as well as builder and skipper of an Ice Flyer. He was a member of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Association. He was a political liberal and a reader of The Nation. His avocations included reading, home repair, carpentry, camping with his buddies, and cross-country skiing. In his earlier years, he enjoyed wind surfing and hang-gliding and built a motorized ultra-light aircraft. He enjoyed attending the Kingston art gallery openings on First Saturdays. He collected works from several favorite local artists. He volunteered at the Happy Apple Thrift Shop in Kingston. He was always working on one or more projects whether at his house, at the home of a friend or on some community project. He was a constant teacher. He provided his children with the opportunities and encouragement to develop their talents and interests. This instilled in them a love of learning, independent thinking, creativity and integrity. He was completely devoted to both of his children and took great pleasure and pride in their accomplishments. He coached youth soccer and was a supportive parent of a Daily Freeman carrier for four years. He was a vocal spectator at his children’s concerts, softball, Little League, soccer and hockey games and rowing regattas. The marriage between Michael and his wife, Emilie Hauser, had a special bond based on the love of learning, living responsibly and deep mutual respect. They had a marriage between equals and supported each other’s endeavors wholeheartedly. He was born in Flint, Michigan on December 7, 1950 to Donald Corey and the late Barbara Jean (Clark) Corey. He graduated from Byron High School in Michigan in 1969, where he was class president, Flint Junior College in 1972 and SUNY College at Oswego in 1980. He was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone in the 1970s. He married Emilie Hauser on December 31, 1977. He was the loving father of Karen and Royce Corey. He was employed by IBM in Kingston, Glendale and Poughkeepsie as a software engineer where he worked on two strategic IBM Main Frame Operating systems, VM and MVS, and was a key contributor to IBM's Strategic Security Product RACF. He retired in 2006. Michael was a trustee of the Kingston Library from 1996 to 2004, serving as vice president and treasurer. He aided the library in its transition into a Special Library District in 2000. He oversaw the acquisition and expansion of computer use in the Library due to his expertise in the field. He was preceded in death by his mother, who died August 10, 2004 in Ellensburg, Washington; his brother, James Nelson Corey, who died in May 1996; and an aunt, Janet Corey French of West Chester, PA, who died on December 5, 2006. Surviving him are his wife of almost 29 years; his father of Durand, Michigan; a daughter, Karen Elisabeth Hauser Corey of Amherst, New York; a son, Royce Michael Hauser Corey of Kingston, New York; two sisters, Valerie Lauer of Pontiac, Michigan and Deborah Williams of Ellensburg, Washington; two brothers, Thomas 'TC' Corey of Dryden, Washington and Steven Corey of Duluth, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. The family thanks the many friends and caregivers that had the honor of caring for Michael during his illness. Their loving care stimulated, enriched and sustained Michael. Reposing at the Simpson-Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Avenue on Thursday, December 21 from 2-4 and 7-9, and Friday, December 22 from 2-4 and 7-9. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday at 12 noon at Simpson-Gaus. Rev. Albert R. Ahlstrom will facilitate. Inurnment will be in Byron, Michigan at a later date. A memorial celebration of Michael’s life will be held in January in Kingston.
