Phillip A. Harrington

Phillip A. Harrington of Wagner Ave., Fleischmanns died Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Kingston Hospital. He was 88. He was born in Holland, Michigan on April 29, 1920, a son of the late Harry and Clara Harrington. A longtime Brooklyn resident, Mr. Harrington was a graduate of the Clarence White School of Photography, NYC. His 40-year career began, during the 1940's, when he worked a the Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune, director of photography at the Wisconsin State Journal, acting director of photography at the Minneapolis Tribune. From 1949 - 1971 he was a Staff Photographer at LOOK Magazine, NYC. Photographic assignments, around the world, encompassed every area of the magazine's concern. In 1956-57 he was the first American journalist to enter Red China, and for this coverage received both the James Polk and the Overseas Press Club Awards. He exhibited at Nikon House Gallery, NY, Photography in the Fine Arts, Metropolitan Museum, NY, Ohio University and University of Wisconsin. Mr. Harrington was a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society of England, former Vice President of the NY Microscopical Society, American Society of Magazine Photographers, National Press Photographers Assoc. and Society for Photographic Education. In 1972 he received the NY Microscopical Society's Ashby Award for contributions to the field of microscopy. He received the NY Art Directors' Award for his documentary photo coverage of Elvis Presley. He later specialized in Micro-Photography of the invisible world for editorial, advertising and Corporate Annual Reports. He moved to Fleischmanns in 1984. He served on the Board of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills. The Harrinton Laboratory was located in Fleischmanns. Surviving are two sons Christopher M. Harrington and his wife Melinda of Wallingford, CT and Evan Ross Harrington and his fiance Deborah Ackles of Chicago, IL, his former wife, Joyce M. Harrington of New York City. Reposing at the Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. on Sunday from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Road, Town of Ulster on Monday at 12:00. Rev. Dr. Linda Anderson will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Catskills, 320 Sawkill Road, Kingston, NY 12401.
