Sheldon Zimbler of Fairview Avenue, Kingston, died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at his home. He was 71. He was born in the Bronx, a son of the late Nathan and Jeanne Cooper Zimbler. Received a BA in Economics and Military History from City College of New York. He graduated as a first lieutenant from City University of New York's ROTC program in 1961. Raised in the Bronx, in 1962 Shelly moved to Queens. He moved to Coram, Long Island in 1968 and to Kingston in 1995. Shelly worked forty-seven years in the financial and economic development industries. He was a stock broker for Dean Witter & Co., and later at Bache & Company in New York City. Sheldon was Regional Senior V.P. in Suffolk County for Security National Bank / Chemical Bank. He retired in 1988. He then worked as a Financial Consultant for Banis Financial on Long Island. He founded Zimbler Associates on Long Island and in Kingston. He also worked part-time for MetLife and Allstate Insurance in Kingston. A Member of National Society of Pershing Rifles, he was a co-founder of Coram Sports Association; and co-founder of the Strathmore East Civic Association, Coram. He was a former member of the Port Jefferson Lions Club and former board member of the Coram Mediation Center. In September of 2005, he was appointed by Mayor Sottile, Ward 1 Alderman. Shelly has hosted a weekly talk show on Kingston Area Public Access television, of which he served as Past President and Board Member. In 2008 he published "Undaunted Valor; The Men of Mukden ... In Their Own Words" A member of the Ulster County Chamber of Commerce, Shelly belonged to S.C.O.R.E. and Kingston School to Work Partnership. He served as a Board member of the Relay for Life and was recognized as the Mid-Hudson Valley "Hero of Hope" for 2010 by the American Cancer Society. A Past President of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA). One brother Lawrence Zimbler died previously. Surviving are his wife Suzanne Feldstein Zimbler whom he married June 18, 1961; one daughter Jill-Anne McLaughlin and her husband Grant of Woodstock, two sons Scott Zimbler and his wife Eileen of Mt. Sinai and Michael Zimbler and his wife Kate of Nesconset; four grandchildren Jeremy and Alex McLaughlin, Meghan Rose Zimbler, and Emma Hahn, two niecesShari Lynn Wolfe and Rebecca Graziano, and one grand nephew Sam Graziano. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston. Rabbi Yitzcok Hecht will officiate. Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery. Contributions, in Sheldon's memory, may be made to the American Cancer Society, 95 Schwenk Dr., Kingston, NY 12401.
