Shelley Cook, 83, of Woodstock, died peacefully Friday April 8, 2022, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Born in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Handel & Mollie Heller.

A teacher, a mentor, an ombudsman, a supporter to those in need, Shelley dedicated her life to helping those in crisis as a social worker thru Legal Aid in New York City as well as volunteering for organizations such as Family of Woodstock. A lifelong musician, Shelley was a member of the singing group the Pennywhistlers. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Shelley is survived by her two daughters, Sara Cook and her partner Robert Munn, of New York City and Jennifer Cook-Hanssen and her husband John of Brooklyn, two grandchildren, Isabel, and Jesse, two nephews, Mark Handel and Gary Handel, her niece Karen Baker, her brother Mort Handel and his wife Irma of Boco Raton, FL and many loving cousins.

In addition to her parents. Shelley is predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years William Cook who passed away in 2010.

A graveside service will be held for Shelley on Sunday April 10, 2022, at 1pm at the Woodstock Cemetery officiated by Rabbi Jonathan Kligler of the Woodstock Jewish Congregation.

Simpson-Hammerl Funeral Home is honored to assist the family of Shelley with the funeral arrangements.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Family of Woodstock.
