Shirley Kalina

Shirley Kalina of Rokeby Road, Red Hook, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. She was 73 years of age. A long time Red Hook resident, she was born in Bronx, New York on May 4, 1931, a daughter of the late Samuel and Esther Gottlieb. Shirley married Nathan Kalina in 1952. The couple lived in Queens, New York, for several years until they moved to a farm on Rokeby Road in Red Hook in 1956. They lived at this residence at the time of Shirley’s passing. Shirley and Nathan were active in the community from the time they arrived, becoming involved in religious and political organizations focused on sustaining the quality of life in Red Hook and the surrounding area. They also developed several parcels of land for various uses over the years. This included the residential community in the Town of Red Hook known as Forest Park, as well as the 9-G Lanes Bowling Center, which the couple operated for almost 30 years. They also ran their working farm during the entire time they lived there and the farm remains in operation today. They retired to the farm in 1991, and Shirley remained a visible presence in and around town throughout their retirement. Surviving are her husband Nathan and their two daughters Abbey Kalina Straus and her husband Stephen Straus of Larchmont, New York, and Lydia Kalina Nadel and her husband Alan Nadel of Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren Emily and Elliot Straus and Sydney Nadel; and one sister Ruth Ellman of Holmdel, New Jersey. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 12:00 at Simpson - Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave. Rabbi Mara Nathan will officiate. Interment will be in Montrepose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions in her memory may be made to the Congregation Ahavath Israel, 100 Lucas Ave, Kingston, NY 12401.
