Thomas E. Nozkowski, 75, of High Falls, died Thursday, May 9, 2019 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck.

Born in Teaneck, NJ, he was the only son of the late Edward & Edna Angevine Nozkowski.
Thomas was educated at the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, graduating in 1967 and receiving their President’s Citation in 2008. He spent his life creating paintings, drawings and sculpture. He taught art at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts and was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, receiving their Merit Medal for Painting in 2006. He showed his art in this country as well as internationally, with his work in the permanent collections of virtually every major U.S. Art Museum including the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, SFMOMA, the Smithsonian Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He had retrospectives at the National Gallery of Canada and Ludwig Museum in Koblenz, Germany and was featured in the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. He started exhibiting in group shows in 1973 and made his solo debut in 1979, ultimately counting over 70 solo shows of his paintings, sculpture and prints. Starting in 2007, he was represented by Pace Gallery. In 2017, he was the subject of a career-spanning monograph authored by John Yau.

An avid hiker, he was active in the preservation of land in the Hudson Valley and was vice president of the Friends of the Shawangunks for many years. Gifts in his memory can be made to the Shawangunk Conservancy of the Friends of the Shawangunks.

Tom is survived by his wife Joyce Robins Nozkowski of High Falls, a son, Casimir Nozkowski and his wife, Hannah Bos of Brooklyn, and a grandson, Rocket Bos Nozkowski. A sister, Mary Dana Greenwood, also survives.

A Graveside Service will be held in Benton Bar Cemetery, Accord, NY on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at 12:00 noon.
