Victor M. Sorrentini

Victor M. Sorrentini of Vincent Street died Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany. He was 84. He was born in San German, Puerto Rico on February 20, 1919, a son of the late Herminio and Maria Velez Sorrentini. A US Army veteran of WW II, Mr. Sorrentini was a sergeant in the European Theater of Operations. He was taken prisoner at the French border and lost his left arm. He served from 1940 – 1946 and was awarded a Purple Heart and Battle Star medal. Mr. Sorrentini was a past commander of a V.F.W. Post in upper Manhattan and later joined the American Legion Kingston Post 150 and the Joyce-Schirick Post 1386, V.F.W. and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. On May 7, 1960 he married Zoraida Torres in New York City. A longtime resident of the Bronx, Mr. Sorrentini was the director of a government sponsored consumer program in upper Manhattan for many years. He helped organize and contribute to the annual Puerto Rican day parade. He also belonged to the “Club Civico Poncenio” and served as president of the “Club Folklorica” in New York City. An avid sportman, he was also know to many politicians throughout New York City. He moved to this area in 1978 and worked part-time security for the Ulster County Correctional Facility at Golden Hill. He previously served as a volunteer firefighter for Ulster Hose #5. Beloved husband of Zoraida Sorrentini; loving father of Aglae Dixon and her husband Ronald, Andres Alfonso and his wife Carmen; brother of Asuncion Sorrentini; grandfather of Mark Dixon, Andres Alfonso, Rhonda Dixon-Ziros, Natalie Polacco, Dr. Gishlaine Torres, Desiree Rincones, and Charmaine Alfonso; great grandfather of Michael John, Keldon and Connor Polacco, Almando and Adriana Torres, Alevil, Alexandra and Amaldo Rincones. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Reposing at Simpson – Gaus Funeral Home, 411 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9. The funeral will be Monday at 9:45 AM from the funeral home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Catherine Laboure Church, Lake Katrine at 10:30 AM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Kingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 102, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 or the American Legion Post 150, 18 W. O’Reilly St., Kingston, NY 12401.
